Flying telephone poles

Hey there,

Let me confess something to you.

My knowledge of Scottish culture is basically limited to what I learned on Star Trek - "beam me up, Scotty!".

However, without a doubt one entry on everyone's bucket list should be attending the Cowal Highland Gathering known as the Cowal Games. This tradition, dating back to 1871 (at least), is a curious blend of bagpipes, green pastures and amazing feats of strength.

While more traditional competitions like shot put are on display, the most astonishing Scottish athletic event is without a doubt the caber toss.

Imagine this.

A caber is basically a whittled down telephone pole. With a length of almost 6 meters (19.5 feet) and a weight of around 80 kgs (175 lbs.), cabers are tossed around like toothpicks.

Tossers throw the cabers into the air where it should turn end over end and land directly in front of the tosser.

Did I mention all while wearing a kilt?

And for all this work, what do the caber tossers win?

Bragging rights at the pub!
